Event description

Mountain Acoustics Luthier Invitational
Mountain Acoustics Luthier Invitational is a 2-day festival featuring the finest luthiers in the region with antique string instrument show, vendors, Luthier Jam on Friday night and more. Concert with Mark & Molly O'Conner.

Western North Carolina and the surrounding region is historically the center of American acoustic music creativity; both in performance and the craft of instrument making called lutherie. Once a year, the Mountain Acoustics Luthier Invitational showcases the work of the region's finest luthiers. This gathering of luthiers is by invitation only. Recommended by their peers and invited based on the quality of their work, you will encounter 30 of the finest builders working in the craft today coming from across the southeastern US.

This is your opportunity meet the builders, try out the finest handmade instruments available today, and go home with the guitar, violin, mandolin, banjo, harp, dulcimer or other instrument of your dreams. Or you can arrange directly with the builder to have your custom instrument crafted to your wishes.

Included in this event is a historical exhibit of dozens of instruments illustrating the development of American musical craft ranging in date from 1870 to the present. This collection also includes original photos, sheet music and periodicals from each era, putting the instruments in context.

The Luthier Invitational event is strongly supported by the community. Dozens of local businesses, volunteers and community organizations rally to support and present this premier event. The exhibit is presented in the Burnsville Town Center venue. Food service is provided by App Java, a community center and the best coffee and treats in the area. A luthier jam takes place on Friday evening at the vibrant Homeplace Beer Company and restaurant. The Saturday evening concert at First Baptist Church on the town square features nationally renowned musicians, Mark and Maggie O’Connor. All this is followed by a week of concert and jam events ending with RiddleFest, a popular event celebrating the music of Lesley Riddle and presented by the Traditional Voices Group in Burnsville.

Originated by Chee Ammen, an event producer with a long history of outstanding national events, tours, festivals and more. Among many other productions, he produced a concert on the aircraft carrier USS Lexington that was edited into a commercial shown during Super Bowl. This experience has led the community to come to together to support a stunningly successful and unique celebration of the art of lutherie.

You are invited to visit Burnsville and lovely Western North Carolina and to attend this event. In October the mountains are brilliant in Fall leaves, music and cultural events are plentiful, and the famous WNC hospitality is ready for you to enjoy!
