The story of the guitar

I began crafting this guitar in late 2018. Near the final stages, I damaged the soundboard beyond repair. Though the neck was complete, it needed a new soundboard. This was devastating and made me question my skills, career and life choices. Is my vision even possible? Is it worth the pain? I took a step back from this guitar to figure it out.

During this hiatus, I had the privilege of learning from one of the finest contemporary guitar makers, trained by the legendary Ervin Somogyi. Our intensive sessions transformed my understanding of guitar voicing, from tonewood selection to the delicate art of shaping a guitar’s voice. Though I had been building guitars for over 12 years, this training illuminated decades of profound insights, refining my craft in ways I hadn’t imagined. With newfound clarity and skill, I was finally ready to breathe new life into Quasimodo, crafting a new soundboard with renewed understanding.

One day during the reconstruction, I was speaking to my mentor about it. She asked why this guitar meant so much to me. "Who is it to you?" she inquired. The character Quasimodo, the hunchback of Notre-Dame immediately came to mind. Despite being abandoned and misunderstood, he possesses a noble heart, saving Esmeralda from harm. This guitar is my Quasimodo. Flawed and burdened by circumstances beyond its control, yet full of potential for those willing to see beyond its imperfections.

The new soundboard, crafted with the advanced techniques from my exclusive training, surpasses the original in every way. Its refined resonance can be felt in each note, a testament to the knowledge gained through intensive practice.

When it came time to add the trim, I chose to stop it at the exact spot of the accident—a tribute to the mishap that nearly ended its journey. The red sunburst finish, inspired by Esmeralda’s dress, beautifully contrasts the white elements of the neck, bridge, rosette, and trim. Though we honor its imperfections, Quasimodo is structurally flawless—a remarkable fusion of engineering and artistry.

This is the Quasimodo's story. This is my story. And perhaps, it is your story too.

Testimonial

''I purchased a 00 Cedar/Walnut guitar from Max and the the playability and tone are world class. Compared to other high end guitars that I owned, this ranks amongst the best. This is not your average Collings, Goodall or Martin. Max's fretwork and attention to detail set him apart from his competitors. His guitars are better than the other guitars that I've played. I have been looking for another used Max Baron acoustic guitar but I they don't often come up for sale. I believe his work is this good because he loves his craft.''
