Paris Guitar Festival Julien Lebrun – Peux-tu te présenter en quelques mots ?

Le bois a toujours été une matière impressionnante à mes yeux. C’est pour en découvrir ses secrets que j’ai étudié l’ébénisterie à l’école Boulle, jusqu’au BAC Professionnel et fais mes études à la « Newark School of Guitar Making »

Mes premiers instruments, réalisés sous les conseils avisés des luthiers Roy Courtnall, James Lister et Adrian Lucas, me valent, en 2009, l’attribution du prix Hiscox pour créativité et avancé.

Fort de toute ces expériences, j’ouvre mon atelier à Croix, à proximité de Lille, dans le Nord.

Sans jamais m’éloigner de la tradition, j’y pratique une lutherie moderne, cherchant continuellement à améliorer la jouabilité du musicien, l’aspect esthétique et acoustique de l’instrument.

Que ce soit pour la fabrication ou les réglages, pas de standard dans mon atelier. Chaque jeu, chaque attaque est différente et nécessite un ajustement approprié.

Toutes les parties de la fabrication sont assurées par mes soins, du choix du bois, à la fabrication, jusqu’au vernis au tampon.

Les bois utilisés sont tous de première qualité. J’utilise donc des essences classiques (palissandre, ébène, acajou, cyprès, etc…) mais dans un souci d’écologie, les bois locaux ne sont pas négligés aussi bien pour leurs propriétés acoustiques qu’esthétiques. (if, poirier, frêne, noyer, merisier, etc…).

I have always been interested in wood and I discovered its secrets and characteristics by studying cabinet making at the Ecole Boulle in Paris and gaining a Professional Baccalaureate.

After specializing in the restoration of antique furniture I then ventured into the making of string instruments. As a musician and guitarist I was automatically attracted to the guitar hence the beginning of my studies at the Newark School of Guitar Making in the UK.

I made my first guitar under the advice and support from guitar makers and tutors, Roy Courtnall, James Lister and Adrian Lucas. In 2009 I was awarded the Hiscox Prize for Progress and Creativity.

I decided to open my workshop at Croix near Lille in the North of France. I practice modern guitar making but without ever straying from the traditional craft and skills. I am continually searching to improve the musician’s playing experience, exploring the essential asthetics and accoustic aspects of the instrument.
Whether it be for the setting-up or the making of a guitar, everything is made to measure in my workshop. Every player has his unique way of playing, every string attack is different and requires appropiate adjustments and set-up.

I undertake all the different stages of the guitar making, from the choice of the wood up to the final French polish.

I first use quality and classical types of woods such as Rosewood, Ebony, Mahogany and Cypres. For ecological reasons, local woods are prized for their accoustic and asthetic qualities such as Yew, Pearwood, Ash, Walnut and Cherry all of which are used in the making of my fine instruments.
