Paris Guitar Festival Michel Aboudib – Peux-tu te présenter en quelques mots ?

 

Je suis né en Syrie et j’ai également vécu en France et aux États-Unis. J’ai vécu suffisamment longtemps dans chacun de ces pays pour que les différentes cultures fassent partie de moi et que je sois, d’une certaine manière, de nulle part.

Pour moi, tous nos sens sont impliqués dans notre relation avec la guitare.

Ils ont tous une influence sur ce que nous ressentons et sur la façon dont nous interagissons avec l’instrument. Et tout comme le joueur lorsqu’il joue, la fabrication de la guitare fait appel à tous mes sens.

L’esthétique bien sûr, le grain du bois, les formes, les couleurs, construisent nos attentes.

Il y a aussi l’odeur du bois quand je le travaille, des résines que j’utilise dans le vernis et de la guitare finie quand on ouvre l’étui et quand on la tient pour jouer. C’est déjà la promesse d’un autre monde. Ensuite, la sensation du bois, la texture de la finition, la réponse de la guitare au toucher et les vibrations qui se propagent dans votre corps lorsque vous jouez.

Enfin, il y a le son, qui est pour moi la partie la plus importante car il crée toutes les relations, entre le joueur et la guitare et entre eux et l’auditeur. J’écoute chaque morceau de bois que j’utilise et je continue d’écouter au fur et à mesure que je construis pour que ce que le joueur et son public entendent transcende notre monde ou l’honore tout simplement.

I was born in Syria and have also lived in France and in the US. I have lived long enough in each of these countries for the different cultures to be part of me and for me to be, in a way, from nowhere.

To me all our senses are involved in our relationship with the guitar.

They all have an influence on what we feel and how we interact with the instrument. And just like the player when they play, making the guitar involves all my senses.

The aesthetics of course, the grain of the wood, the shapes, the colors, build our expectations. There is also the smell of the wood when I work it, of the resins I use in the varnish and of the finished guitar when you open the case and when you hold it to play. It is already the promise of another world. Then the feel of the wood, the texture of the finish, the response of the guitar to the touch and the vibrations that carry into your body when you play. Finally there is the sound, which to me is the most important part since it creates all the relationships, between the player and the guitar and between them and the listener. I listen to each piece of wood I use and I keep listening as I build so that what the player and their audience hear hopefully transcends our world or maybe simply honors it.
