Description
David Šefl – Hand-made stringed instruments
I am a Czech luthier specializing in the making of mandolins and related instruments such as mandolas and octave mandolins. I also build guitars, ukuleles, and violins, combining traditional craftsmanship with a precise, modern approach to tone and playability.
I studied at the School of Musical Instrument Making in Hradec Králové, where I focused on string instruments under master Jan F. Veselý, as well as on artistic woodworking and carving. During my apprenticeship in the workshop of Jan Pilař, I learned valuable violin-making skills from Ladislav Zika.
After graduation, I joined BSG Guitars in Žamberk, gaining hands-on experience in guitar construction. Around that time, I began building mandolins independently, drawing inspiration from both violin and guitar-making traditions. While I often follow classic A- and F-style designs, I also enjoy exploring subtle variations on traditional forms.
Since 2018, I have been working independently, focusing primarily on the creation of new instruments while also offering repair and restoration services. As an active musician myself — playing mandolin and violin in several bands — I strive to create instruments that are finely crafted, reliable, and inspiring to play.
