William A Mackay Interview 2 Repairs restorations and maintenance

Apart from creating custom instruments, we know that you do all types of repairs and maintenance on bowed strings instruments, can you also take care of other types of plucked stringed instruments?

I believe very much in trying to be a true luthier capable of working on and producing a range of stringed instrument.

It’s an approach that developed from my background as well as what is practical in trying to run a luthiery workshop in a remote area such as the Scottish Highlands.

I’ve always felt a strange affinity towards double bass but I’m also just very interested in all manner of stringed instruments and looking at there historical origins.

I’ve managed to acquire a small collection of interesting stringed instruments mostly with a folky flavor, in it I have hammered dulcimer, Appalachian dulcimer, bowed psaltery and mandolin among others.

I will be listing a few in the future on the website, all handmade and some a bit strange.
