Petko Petkov Interview 9 Varnish – Can you tell us what kind of varnishing techniques you use?
I use two types of varnishes for my instruments: oil-based and spirit-based. Both of them are natural varnishes.
I order the oil varnishes from the best manufacturers in the world.
The spirit varnishes I prepare by myself according to an authentic Italian recipe, which I have improved over the time according to my observations and research experience. The main ingredients of my varnishes are resins from special plants from different parts of the world and alcohol.
The exact proportions of the different resins determine the quality of the varnish and hence the sound of the instrument.
What will be the combination of varnishes I use for my instruments depends on the customer’s preferences for the sound of the instrument, as well as the specific requirements of the markets in different parts of the world.
For example, in Asia, my customers prefer spirit varnished instruments, while my orders from Europe and America are mainly for antique looking instruments, for which I use a combination of oil and spirit varnish or just oil varnish.
